AQVAM PERDVCENDAM CVRAVIT – INGLES

Presentation
The urban and civic demarcation introduced by Rome in the Ulterior-Baetica province transformed the traditional relations between communities on that area and its hydric resources. Several aspects of the new organization required an active reorganization, from the ancestral way, in the collection, administration and use of water resources.
From this point, the initial premise for the preparation of this congress consider that the studies of ancient Roman water management in Baetica, from the perspective of the municipal demarcation and the needs of the communities, hasn’t been tackled yet. The results of this investigation will offer new perspectives for the comprehension of those societies.
An important matter in our approach is also the contribution of this congress to the configuration of the so called “Water Culture”, a need of our actual societies related to the require of a better management, treatment and use of hydric resources in which the historic knowledge plays an important role. The research on water management in Baeticaconstitute a significant source of transfer of results of the investigation, particularly when it is tackled from a multidisciplinary work, as it is pretended in this case, with specialists in historic and environmental studies.
From this premises, the purpose of this congress is the presentation of the results of the integral studies on the water administration in Baetica’s municipalities, the analysis of water use related with productive activities, and the inquiry of water’s socio-cultural role. Other related purposes are: systematization and revision of literary, epigraphic and archaeological information; improve knowledge of the rational use of water in certain productive systems of that period; and the analysis of the civic role of water.
The geo-politic framework where is inserted the province of Baetica -the west of the roman empire- configures, without doubt, the historic space of reference where the keys for the comprehension of the phenomenon of relation between roman culture, water and its projection on Hispanic communities are.
